Silk Guide

A few thoughtful details make choosing silk simpler. Explore fabric, momme, fit and care before you choose your next DISANGNI piece.

Silk, Mulberry Silk & Satin: What’s the Difference?

Silk is a natural fibre. Mulberry silk is a type of silk produced by silkworms that feed on mulberry leaves. Other types of genuine silk also exist, so “silk” and “mulberry silk” are related terms, but do not mean exactly the same thing.

Satin describes a weave, not a fibre. Satin can be woven from silk, polyester or other fibres. A smooth, shiny appearance does not prove that a fabric is silk: 100% polyester satin is not silk.

Check the composition, not just the headline. Words such as “silky,” “silk-like” or “satin” do not confirm silk content. Look for a clear fibre composition, and check whether it applies to the whole item or only one side.

The Mulberry Silk We Use at DISANGNI

All silk fabric used in DISANGNI products is 100% mulberry silk.

  • Double-sided silk pillowcases: 100% mulberry silk fabric on both sides.
  • Silk-front pillowcases: 100% mulberry silk fabric on the front, with a different material on the reverse, as specified on each product page.

Please check both the front and reverse fabric compositions when choosing your pillowcase.

Understand momme

Momme (mm) describes the weight of silk fabric. It is different from millimetres and from thread count.

Check the momme stated for the silk fabric on the individual listing. A higher number alone does not describe the fibre composition, stitching, closure or overall construction. Compare these details together.

Choose the right fit and finish

Measure your pillow’s width and length, then match the exact dimensions of the option you select. Standard, Queen and King names vary between countries. Convert inches to centimetres by multiplying by 2.54.

A hidden zipper encloses the pillow; an envelope closure uses an overlapping opening. Choose your preference and check the piece count. For fitted sheets, also measure mattress depth; for duvet covers, measure the duvet rather than the bed.

Gentle care for your pillowcase

Remove the pillow insert and wash the empty cover by hand in cool water with a detergent suitable for silk. Wash colours separately. Do not scrub, bleach, twist or wring.

Rinse with clean, cool water, then gently press out moisture with a clean towel. Spread the cover flat and air dry in the shade. Avoid machine spinning, tumble drying and direct heat. This routine is for pillowcase covers, including silk-front styles; it does not cover pillow inserts or filled bedding.
