How to Wash Silk Pillowcases: A Gentle Care Guide
DISANGNI · The silk edit · Care guide
A gentler laundry routine for the silk you use every day.
Your pillowcase is part of your nightly routine. Caring for it starts with one small habit: read its care label before reaching for the detergent. Silk products can differ in fabric, colour, trims and construction, so the same washing method will not suit every item.
01 / Prepare a little, protect a lot
Check the washing, drying and ironing instructions together. A product may allow washing but restrict heat or machine drying. For silk with a different fabric on the reverse, follow the instructions for the whole item.
Your care essentials
- A clean basin for hand washing.
- A detergent explicitly suitable for silk.
- A clean, colourfast towel.
- A mesh laundry bag if machine washing is permitted.
Before the first wash
Separate pale and dark colours. Avoid mixing delicate silk with rough towels, denim or exposed fasteners. Check the detergent’s fabric guidance and dosage rather than assuming every “gentle” cleaner is suitable.
Remove the pillow insert before washing a pillowcase. This article covers the fabric cover, not a pillow or silk-filled duvet.
02 / Hand wash, when the label allows
- Prepare cool water. Follow any temperature limit on the label. Add silk-suitable detergent at the recommended hand-wash dose and mix it into the water.
- Handle gently. Immerse the pillowcase and move it softly through the water. Do not scrub the fabric against itself or leave it soaking for a long period.
- Rinse carefully. Use clean, cool water to remove the detergent. Support the wet fabric as you lift it.
- Press out moisture. Lay the item on a clean towel and gently press or roll the towel around it. Do not twist or wring.
Keep the routine simple: more detergent, harder rubbing and hotter water are not better care.
03 / Can silk go in the washing machine?
Only if your item’s care label permits it. A machine’s “hand wash” setting does not override a hand-wash-only label.
For machine-washable silk, use a mesh laundry bag and the cool, delicate programme allowed by the label. Follow any spin restrictions, keep the load small and avoid rough items. Remove the silk promptly when the cycle finishes.
04 / Let it dry gently
After pressing out excess water, air dry as directed by the label in a shaded, ventilated place. Avoid direct sun and radiators. Do not use a tumble dryer unless the item’s label expressly allows it. Let the fabric dry fully before putting it back on your pillow or storing it.
If ironing is permitted, use the label’s recommended setting, work on the reverse and place a clean pressing cloth between the iron and the silk. Avoid holding the iron in one place. If the label prohibits ironing, leave out this step.
05 / Spills deserve a lighter touch
Blot a fresh spill gently rather than rubbing. Avoid applying heat or experimenting with bleach, household cleaners or concentrated stain removers. For a persistent stain, seek advice from a professional cleaner experienced with silk and explain what was spilled.
Silk can change colour or texture when treated incorrectly. No home-care recipe can guarantee that an existing stain or damaged finish will disappear.
Everyday care questions
Can I use my regular laundry detergent?
Check its packaging. Use it only if it is explicitly suitable for silk and compatible with the item’s care instructions. Do not add bleach.
How often should I wash my pillowcase?
Build a regular routine around how you use it. Check for perspiration, product residue, odour or visible soiling, and clean as needed using the permitted method. Keeping a spare cover makes it easier to allow enough drying time.
Can I wash my silk pillow insert with the cover?
Do not assume so. Remove the cover and check the insert’s separate label. Filled bedding needs its own care instructions.
What if my DISANGNI label and this guide differ?
Follow the product label. Send a photograph of it and your order number to info@disangnisilk.com if you need help understanding the instructions.
